Engine Knock and Charcoal Turbo
joshbuys replied to Mbl35's topic in 7.3L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
I'm at a dealership that's been around forever and we don't even have one!!!! My old dealer had one and it was GREAT!!!! Sucks having to diag 7.3 miss without one after having used it!!!! -
+1 NEVER HAD A PROBLEM TORQUING IN CAB - I LIKE THE NEW SNAP-OFF TOOL, BUT I'VE ALWAYS BEEN ABLE TO FIT MY TORQUE WRENCH IN THERE!
-
had a guy I worked with at my old dealership do this on a truck - just make sure you have the rear stud in question in the head/rocker box assembly as you put the head on - other than that - not much different than doing bolts on it. have fun!!!!

I've seen several with repeat radiator leaks (after 't' installation) over heating/coolant temps change very rapidly when driving down the road (monitor ect/eot). Seen one that had a repeat horizontal egr cooler failure. On a side not - did a set this last week on a truck that had 98K miles on it - wouldn't blow warm air - after idling for an hour the ect was around 90*F - the rubber seal on the thermostats was peeling off and on the longer one it was pulled back about 1/3 of the way around. First time I've seen one like that on these.
-
Yep - I've seen several of these hyper extended t-stats - like Greg said - mainly on the high flow (longer of the 2) thermostats.

HAS ANYONE BEEN SEEING THESE TRUCKS LEFT HAND REAR LOWER EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLT BACKING OUT? I'VE SEEN SEVERAL WITH A LOUD EXHAUST SQUEAL AND FIND THIS BOLT LOOSE - RE-TORQUE THE BOLT - NOISE GONE. ALSO HAVE HAD A COUPLE THAT CUSTOMER 'TIGHTENED' BOLT HIMSELF AND BROKE OFF IN HEAD - JUST FINISHED ONE UP THAT I HAD TO DRILL THE BOLT OUT OF. PAIN IN THE BUTT TO DRILL IN THAT TIGHT SPACE!!!!

08 f350 high picth whistle
joshbuys replied to rayhubble's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Got one that whistles all the time - hot or cold - just barely touch the throttle with or without a load - left exhaust manifold lower rear bolt - broke off in head. Had one before with same issue - gotta pull manifold to repair properly! Should be fun! -
08 550 looses power after reaching 75mph.
joshbuys replied to kevin41's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
F250/F350 LIMITED TO 96 MPH, F450/F550 LIMITED TO 84 MPH. -
yeah, where did all those shopping carts come from?..........

I can have both heads off in about 2.5 hours with cab on....and YES EVERYTHING GETS PUT BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM WHEN DONE!!!! I'm not a hack by any means - had a guy give me a hard time a couple weeks ago when I did one about the way I laid everything out on the bench so that I could put all back in same order/orientation during reassembly. Occasionally things get mixed up and don't get back in the same hole, but most times, all major components(ie: injectors, rockers, bridges, get back in the same holes....pushrods always make the same holes as I have an old coolant jug with holes in it to organize those!

Negative Fuel Pressure
joshbuys replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
Ford came back today and said "FSE decision stands - warranty denied due to lack of maintenance" they failed to properly maintain the cooling system (kept adding green stuff 'til it quit running) - horizontal cooler completely gone out of it - bent cylinder 8 connecting rod - trucks going outside and they can figure it out from there! -
Negative Fuel Pressure
joshbuys replied to Keith Browning's topic in 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel Engines
After some of the stuff I've seen and had approved in the last year (some with inspectors and pictures of everything) I've come to the conclusion that Ford will warranty anything.....so nothing suprises me and I figure warranty will cover it until I'm told otherwise. Guy across the shop from me has a 6.4 torn down now - company has TWO (yes that's a 2!) oil change records in 52,000 miles (65,000 if you go by the hours) and ONE fuel filter record. Owner of the company keeps trying to claim ignorance like we didn't know this or nobody told us that - my SM told him it was in the owner's manual and then said "Ford doesn't warranty you not reading the Owner's manual"....these guys service oil rig equipment - like they don't know how an hour meter works?!?! let alone a normal oil change interval?!?! Several months back this truck was in with the thermostats out of it (it had red coolant in it - made them pay for a flush and the owner swore he was going to take care of that - now it has green coolant in it and the horizontal cooler blown out of it. FSE happened to be in the area so he did the inspection that prior approval requested and he denied warranty on the spot - now the company owner is filing a CUDL - all their trucks are bought under his name and he has a score of like 87 - I suspect Ford is going to warranty this one! -
Just after I started working in my first dealer, I got tasked with re-assembling a 7.3 that another tech had removed and disassembled - our sales department was refusing to fix it properly and we 'patched' it back together - since I was hourly I was asked by the foreman to finish it up - ran better when done, but never was worthwhile....anyway, I digress....never had a 7.3 torn down this far before, get it all back together, going back in and got the tranny all lined up real nice like, and it won't suck all the way together - about an inch gap....what's going on here?!?! So I ask my mentor and he says do you have the spacer in there? WHAT SPACER???? Luckily it's an E-van, so I backed out the engine enough to slide the spacer in and whala....it all lines up!!!!
-
had same question a while back, asked hotline and they said it didn't matter which way they go - just put back how they came out, i always organize as i'm coming apart so everything goes back the same, but like everyone else here, there have been some mix ups and no issues!
-
that is the problem with ford's system, dealers causing an engine failure against the engine rather than the actual causal - the injector in this case. it should give an option to continue with submission. everything we submit gives us the warning that we're some atrocaious % over the national average, my sm got a letter from ford a week or two ago saying we were getting alot of returns, but our fse and warranty auditor are telling us to keep doing what we're doing, the problem won't fix itself, if everyone would submit causal against ACTUAL causal, we could all be in better shape!
-
Yeah....it hurt pretty good once upon a time....then just as it was starting to feel better, I smacked it again....started to feel good again, so hopefully.....it'll stay that way for a while
-
I personally DON'T bend the rules, and I WON'T ever bend the rules, last week my SM told me to cover injectors in a truck that had this fuel filter - gelled fuel - picture was taken about 3 hours after pulling filter and having sit on bench in shop. Told SM I would be happy to replace under warranty if Ford, knowing the truck was gelled, said to. After a little argument with the SM he told me to submit my findings and let the cards fall where they may. Ford approved the claim, and the SM appologized to me the following day.....MY INTEGRITY is infinitely more important to me than my paycheck!!!!

Completed it also, looking forward to a Coffee Table book also, they always have soooo much information. Lots of info in the course, and lots more to come I'm sure!
